Until the audiometer was discovered the biggest problem was to identify whether the person had lost his complete hearing or had partial hearing loss. In either case, it was very difficult to determine what exactly the problem was. In the olden days, specialists used to clap loudly and also simultaneously vary the force of clap to produce various sound near the ear to see if the person was responding. The process was repeated at both the ears. If the person did not look towards the clap which is a human instinct, then he was declared deaf. The same method was used on new born babies also.
However, with the advancement of technology several more complicated and efficient devices exist today. The audiometer itself has advanced tremendously after it was discovered. It can produce almost all levels of frequencies that exist and test the patient to a very accurate level. The audiometer also produces a graph result called the audiogram, which helps to determine if there is a partial hearing loss or complete hearing loss. The principle is simple -- different living beings have different hearing frequencies. In humans, the same frequencies may vary like if someone is too loud, a person may not hear.
