Magnifier For Visual Disability

Scientists have developed corrective lenses that so that people who are suffering from some deformity of the eyes can see clearly and perfectly. While there are many people who can have their vision corrected by the use of glasses, there are some who cannot be helped with the aid of glasses.

These people with visual disability do not have vision acuity, and this cannot be corrected with the help of glasses.

Usually magnifiers are used for people with visual disability. This disability is invariably low vision, which can occur due to age, genetics, illnesses, diseases or traumatic injuries. A person with visual disability needs a prescription from a qualified eye specialist so that he can get the proper power for the magnifier. Usually the specialist will determine the power based on the person's requirements and near visual acuity. Initially low power magnifiers are prescribed and then the power is gradually increased depending on the person's needs. It is important to note that the higher the power of the magnifier, the smaller will be the field of vision.

Usually the power of the magnifier for visual disability allows the person to fulfill a certain task for which he or she uses the magnifier. The magnifier can be handheld or mounted on a stand. Usually when the person moves the eye closer to a magnifier, increases the field of vision.

Usually lower power magnifiers are prescribed for people who have visual acuity of 3/60 or more. High power magnifier for visual disability is prescribed for people with visual acuity less than 3/60.

Magnifier for visual disability enables a person with low vision to use their vision to the maximum. It helps to promote literacy; and it is a low cost measure to enable people to read normal books instead of opting for large print books, which are rather expensive. However, a magnifier also makes the disability more noticeable.
