Treatment For Paraplegics

Here are three levels of disorders in paraplegia. Paraplegia is basically a condition caused due to an injury of the spinal cord and it causes the person to lose their physical abilities. Paraplegic, quadriplegic and tetraplegic are the terms used to describe the various levels of disability that a spinal cord injury can cause.

The worst that can happen is that a person might get paralyzed if the spinal cord is injured severely. Spinal cord damage is often a result of accident or trauma. Several types of accidents can cause this type of injury. The treatment or this condition is extremely difficult and also depends on whether it is a complete spinal injury or partial injury. A complete injury would paralyze the person completely and a partial injury will cause the person to lose some of their physical abilities. The person may also have sensation below the lesion even without movement.

The only treatment available for people with this condition is rehabilitation. The rehabilitation center can take care of them and also use some physiotherapy and other occupational therapy techniques to revive the persons lost muscle control. It will also help the paraplegics to have a positive outlook towards life. A paraplegic cannot expect long term treatment at this point of time as there is none available. However, there is some hope for them in stem cell research with the help of which some part of the spinal cord can be replaced. Stem cell research may produce some positive results after a few years but until then assistive devices can be a great substitute for the lost physical abilities among paraplegics.
