Baby Boomers - Travel Habits

The trend of travelling for tourism and luxury travel is suddenly on the rise throughout the U.S. This is especially true in the case of baby boomers, the generation of people born between 1946 and 1964. Baby boomers comprise nearly 20 percent of the U.S. population which is equal to 76.1 million Americans. However, the travel habits of baby boomers are quite different from those of either their parents, or their children.

Baby boomers belong to a sophisticated generation and prefer extremely memorable vacations. They usually show a distinct preference for culturally and socially related travel, to satiate their intellectual curiosity. Owing to their commitment to the society and environment, they tend to show an inclination towards environment oriented travel and prefer to visit large city destinations that provide immense cultural opportunities.

According to a poll involving top luxury travel specialists from across the nation to identify the hottest travel trends in 1998 and predict the travel habits of America's affluent in 1999, more and more baby boomers are opting for cruises and expeditions as a part of their luxury travel. Baby boomers usually prefer to get involved in adventure sports activities such as hiking, trekking, biking, snow skiing, rafting, kayaking and canoeing. According to the poll, the most preferred adventure / outdoor destination for baby boomers in 1998 was Costa Rica. The poll also describes certain travel habits of baby boomers. Baby boomers usually prefer to limit the length of their cruise to 8 days, prefer the presence of their children on the cruises along with them, like to take small sized ships for the cruise, and feel more comfortable in less formal atmosphere (instead of black-tie dinner, etc).
