Can Botox Shots Be Given In The Feet ?

Cosmetic denervation is a procedure where Botox injections are used to soften face muscles and improve the appearance of dynamic wrinkles like frown lines and crow’s feet.

Large number of people are taking Botox injections to regain a more youthful look and experience. Botox injections contain minute concentration of Botulinum toxin type A, a poisonous neurotoxin derived from a bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum.  Injections are administered intradermally to patients using a tiny microneedle. In most cases, patients do not require any sedation or local anesthesia.

Patients suffering from Cerebral Palsy, a muscular disorder, can also use Botulinum toxins for controlling partial muscle paralysis. Regulated doses of Botox injection can relax spastic muscles and improve their function in these patients. Patients suffering from Cerebral Palsy experience severe trouble while walking and maintaining balance due to improper functioning of spastic muscles. In this case, Botox injections are given in the lower leg and feet.

In a recent study, researchers have also found that Botox injections are also effective in helping patients with diabetic foot ulcers. Around 17 million people in US suffer with diabetes. The most effective way of treating diabetic foot ulcers is to apply casting on the foot. This removes the pressure off the foot and helps the ulcers to heal. However, foot ulcers return once the casting is removed and the patient starts walking with shoes. At this stage, the skin on the feet is not strong enough to handle the pressure during walking. Botox injections on the calf and the feet can loosen the muscles in this area and relieve the pressure during walking. Calf muscles recover from Botox in 2-3 months and that time is enough to get relieved from foot sore.

Patients experiencing pedal hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating under the feet) also can use Botox injections. However, the effects are not as prominent as in axillary hyperhidrosis.
