Rhinoplasty Risks
If rhinoplasty is performed by a qualified and an experienced surgeon, then the possibility of complications is very remote and if at all they will be minor in nature. Rhinoplasty Risks:
Burst blood vessels -- Some times burst blood vessels may become visible as small red spots. These may remain permanent. This is a rare occurrence but the patient should be aware of.
Bleeding -- This may occur up to four weeks after surgery. Patient needs to avoid nose blowing and nose picking to minimize bleeding.
Abnormal shape -- This can be due to surgical error. This can also take place if the patient is sleeping on one side or he is not keeping the head elevated enough. The nose can get pulled on one side if it is not supported by the cast properly.
Wound infection -- The rate of wound infection is around 2 percent for this procedure. If implants are used, that increases the chance of infection. This can be treated with antibiotics and drainage.
Risk of smoking -- Smoking reduces the oxygen available to the tissues for healing. This will slow down healing. Smoking needs to be stopped for 4 weeks before and after surgery.
Toxic shock syndrome -- This is found to occur only in 0.016 percent cases of people who have undergone this surgery. However, if this occurs, the mortality rate is 11 percent. The symptoms for this are fever, vomiting, diarrhea and a rash similar to sunburn.
Complications rate for Rhinoplasty is in the range of 4-18 percent. The rate is lower in the case of experienced surgeons. Life threatening complications occur in 1.7-5 percent of cases.
