How Many People Are On Medicaid ?

Medicaid offers cost coverage on medical services to low-income families who satisfy certain other criteria.

Apart from the low-income criterion, the other requirements are age, and disability amongst others. Medicaid is the largest medical services program in the United States of America, in terms of both the number of enrollees and the amount spent. The following statistics have been obtained from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

As per the statistics for the year 2001, the Medicaid program provided health care services to over 46.0 million people. The statistics for the year 2002 indicate that the number of eligible individuals who enrolled for the Medicaid program and who availed their services was about 39.9 million. The enrollees were further classified on the basis of age groups and the results indicated that the largest group which enrolled or availed the services was of children. About 18.4 million children availed the services, which constituted 46 percent of the total number.

The statistics for the year 2004 indicate that about 28.6 million children received Medicaid benefits. This group constituted 52 percent of all Medicaid beneficiaries for that year. Likewise, there were about 13.5 million adult beneficiaries, constituting 24 percent of beneficiaries and 4.7 million aged beneficiaries, who constituted 8 percent of all Medicaid beneficiaries, for that year. The statistic for the year 2009, indicate that there were about 53 million Medicaid beneficiaries.

The percentage of population, state-wise, enrolled in Medicaid and/or Medicare is estimated as follows. The percentage varies between 8 percent to 25 percent in about 8 states, 20 percent to 25 percent in 25 states and greater than 25 percent in the remaining 17 states, including Washington DC.
