SSI Disability Requirements

Disability according to Social Security Administration (SSA) is a physical or mental condition that has prevented a person from working or has limited a person’s activities to doing basic work such as walking, sitting, and performing day to day living activities for twelve months or is foreseen that it may prevent the person from working for the next twelve months. Under such circumstances, one can apply for Social Security disability benefits.

Any person filing a disability claim will be interviewed and in such an interview, a claims representative will seek all information regarding the treating physician, his address, telephone number along with the date of the treatment and other personal information such as date of birth and marriage. One is also required to submit proof of citizenship or alien status, to be entitled for benefits. The SSA will also seek medical evidence from the applicant’s doctors.

Before deciding whether a person qualifies for the Social Security disability benefits, the SSA will check the employment history of the applicant, mainly the number of years that the applicant has worked. Most importantly the SSA will not consider any application where the applicant may be earning more than a stipulated amount every month. The claimant also will have to meet asset resource requirement wherein the claimant’s assets may not increase $2000 limit, excluding the primary vehicle and the home of the claimant.

Hence, if all the above criteria are met, then a person can file for social security disability benefits and also claim the same. However, if any of the above criteria is not met, any such claim may be rejected.
