Pros Of Living Wills

A living will is described as a document written by a person instructing the physician about his wishes of withholding or withdrawing a life-sustaining procedure or device in the event of terminal condition in the coming future.

A living will is a type of advance health care planning that allows a competent person to indicate preferences for medical care well in advance in case of situations where he will be unable to make health care decisions. There are various advantages of this procedure. Some of these are listed below.

A living will provides the patient with the authority of rejecting a medical treatment, thereby preserving and respecting a person’s human rights.

A living will provides the family and health care professionals a clear description about the types of treatments a patient wishes to have in case if he is unable to speak. Depending on the wishes of the patient, a doctor is more likely to give appropriate treatment without having any ambiguity or mixed opinions.

A living will prevents arguments among family members. In the absence of a living will, family members often get confused in deciding a medical treatment that would be in the best interest of the patient. Some may like to keep the life support system, while others would like to discontinue it.

A living will prevents one’s children or spouse from going through the strain and difficulty while deciding to keep their loved one alive or not.

A person writing a living will would clearly know what will happen in future in case of terminal medical situations. One need not live with the fear that he will one day wake up unable to breathe on his own and stuck in the hospital bed for the entire life.
