The Cons Of Living Wills

A living will is a written statement that expresses a person’s desires with regard to health care treatment in situations where the person becomes mentally incapable and/or physically incapable of making any decisions.

Although it provides the advantage of preventing ambiguity and arguments among family members and health care professionals, it is also associated with several disadvantages. Some of these are listed below.

A living will must be prepared under the careful supervision of a healthcare provider and has to be notarized in the presence of an attorney to make it a valid document. The entire process is very expensive requiring more upfront costs than a regular will.

A person cannot change his treatment decisions once the living will is notarized.

A living will is often written in vague terms without any clear description about the treatments a person wishes and treatments he does not want. This can result in arguments and confusion.

Writing a living will can be a depressing experience.

In most cases, patients do not communicate their desires and feelings to their family and friends before making a living will. As a result, arguments tend to arise when the loved ones do not happen to agree with the decisions made by the patient in his living will.

In several medical complications, health care professionals find it hard to translate the wishes of the patient documented in his living will into a reality.

Another disadvantage is that a living will is not found when it is required. Many people choose to keep their living will locked in a safe location without communicating to family members and friends. In these cases, doctors can provide treatment depending on their analysis and desires.
