Side Effects Of Imitrex Usage In The Elderly

Imitrex is the brand name of the drug Sumatriptan succinate. Imitrex is a selective 5-hydroxytryptamine 1 receptor subtype agonist used in the treatment of migraine and cluster headaches. Imitrex helps in stabilizing serotonin levels in the brain. Sumatriptan present in Imitrex is structurally similar to serotonin and binds to 5-HT receptors, thus activating them. Activation of these receptors causes vasoconstriction of dilated arteries and decreasing the activity of trigeminal nerve. Imitrex is available as 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg oral tablets.

Imitrex is a fast acting drug whose effects last only for a short duration. The drug is metabolized in the body by an enzyme called monoamine oxidase A and is excreted from the urine in the form of indole acetic acid and glucuronic acid. Side effects of Imitrex include cardiac arrests due to vasoconstriction and hypertension, chest or throat pain, dizziness, abnormal blood pressure, palpitations, seizures, severe stomach pain and cramps. Over dosage of the drug causes a rare medical condition called sulfhemoglobinemia characterized by the presence of greenish-black colored blood due to integration of sulfur into hemoglobin. Imitrex should not be prescribed to patients having history of angina, hypertension, coronary heart problems, hepatic insufficiency and ischemic bowel disease.

Older people are at a higher risk of acquiring heart related problems and hepatic insufficiency apart from the above mentioned symptoms. Due to their fragile body condition, Imitrex is not recommended for adults as they can easily succumb to death due to a cardiac arrest. Older people also suffer from conditions such as depression and dementia that require usage of antidepressants. Imitrex should not be taken in combination with any of the antidepressant.
