Side Effects Zolpidem Tartrate Elderly

Zolpidem tartrate is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic drug used in the short term treatment of insomnia. The drug belongs to imidazopyridine class of drugs. It influences an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain known as gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) by binding to GABA receptor-benzodiazepine receptor complex and induces a sedative or hypnotic effect.

Zolpidem tartrate is available in 5 mg and 10 mg strength oral tablets. These tablets should not be prescribed for extended use. Side effects of this drug include hallucinations, euphoria, anxiety, irritation, increased appetite, nausea, vomiting, decreased libido, amnesia, angioedema or severe facial swelling, anaphylaxis and delusions. People taking sedative drugs tend to suffer with complex and abnormal behavioral patterns such as sleep-eating, sleep-driving and sleep-walking. Extended usage of Zolpidem tartrate can lead to drug abuse and addiction. Over dosage of this drug is very harmful since it can lead the patient into excessive sleeping and coma. Zolpidem tartrate should not be recommended directly to older people, debilitated patients, people suffering with hepatic insufficiency and patients who are hypersensitive to the drug.

Physicians should carefully review the medical history of the patient before prescribing Zolpidem tartrate. This precaution is even more vital when the patient is old aged. Most significant side effect of this drug in older people is impaired motor and cognitive performance. Old age people are more sensitive to the drug and can easily succumb to its side effects. Hence, elder people should be recommended to take only one 5 mg tablet per day just before bedtime so as to minimize any side effects due to usage of the drug.
