Herbs For Alzheimer's Or Dementia

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder characterized by reduction in levels of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, development of amyloid plaques, beta-amyloid deposits in cerebral blood vessels, presence of neurofibrillary tangles, degraded neurons and degeneration of brain. People suffering with Alzheimer’s disease experience memory loss, dementia, language problems and other cognitive and coordinative dysfunctions.

Incidence of Alzheimer’s is very common in persons above 60 years. The current treatment of Alzheimer’s disease is through medication involving pharmaceutical drugs such as Hydergine, Dexedrine, and other antidepressants. Supplements such as B-vitamins, anti-oxidants, acetylcholine precursors and acetyl-L-carnitine are prescribed to reduce the effects of Alzheimer’s.

Apart from the orthodox therapies, Alzheimer’s disease can also be treated using various kinds of herbal extracts. One such herbal medicine that is widely used in European countries is the Ginkgo bilboa leaf. The extract from these leaves is rich in flavinoids and promotes blood circulation to the brain and body. Another useful therapy is to administer curcumin, a yellow-colored compound obtained from the extracts of turmeric. Muira puama is an herbal plant found in Brazil. Extracts from this plant have been traditionally used for sexual enhancement. However, recent research findings have proved that the extract of Muira puama can indeed inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity.

There are two different herbal treatment options available in Chinese medicine. While one method concentrates on administration of traditionally developed complex herbal formulas, another approach is to administer patients with an alkaloid drug called Huperzine A. This drug is derived from a herb called huperzia. This drug prevents the reduction of acetylcholine in brain. Information about other herbal medications is available in books related to Chinese traditional medicine.
