Baby Boomer Healthcare Issues

Post World War II between 1946 and 1964, certain countries like Australia, Canada, United States and UK experienced an unusual increase in baby births, a phenomenon termed as ‘baby boom’. All the persons born during this period are known as ‘baby boomers’. Baby boomers comprise nearly 20 percent of the U.S. population which is equal to 76.1 million Americans. Many of these are getting into their 50s and are bound to suffer with serious health complications causing an increased burden on the medical industry of the country.

Baby boomers are at an increased risk of suffering with diseases related to old age and improper lifestyle. Some of these include Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, cardiac stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and cancer. Health risks in baby boomers can be reduced if they follow a distinct diet pattern that does not contain high fat and high salt. Baby boomers should have high preference for easily digestible foods containing lots of whole grains, fresh vegetables and fruits. Another factor that is critical for maintaining health in baby boomers is regular and moderate physical exercise that can include biking, swimming, walking, jogging and aerobics. These people should have a periodical health check-up so as to facilitate early detection and prevention of potential health problems.

Most adult Americans have a healthcare insurance coverage that is insufficient. Insurance companies provide insurance coverage to individuals depending upon their income. While low and moderate income individuals and their families just cannot afford the cost of medical insurance, higher income individuals prefer to have insurance till the age of 65. Hence, these people have to spend from their pocket towards healthcare costs during old age. Self-employed individuals are at an even greater risk of getting affected by medical costs.
