As a person ages, the kidneys do not perform they way they used to when the person was young. The kidneys shrink in size besides showing a reduction in efficiency. There is no doubt if an adult has kidney failure, it will reduce his independence and affect his wellbeing.

Many seniors have what is known as end stage renal failure. This can occur due to many factors like hypertension, atherosclerosis, or diabetes mellitus. So, what are the symptoms of end stage renal failure in the elderly? What symptoms should you be keeping an eye out of for?

Symptoms of End Stage Renal Failure in the Elderly:
Some of common symptoms that appear initially when an elderly has end stage renal failure are as follows:

  • Weight loss without trying to lose weight
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Puritis or itching of the body
  • Hiccups that occur very frequently

However, as the end stage failure progresses, more symptoms develop. These symptoms are increase or decrease in urination, confusion, lethargy, drowsiness, blood in vomit or stools, cramps, seizures, twitching of muscles, neuropathy, formation of white crystals on the skin, and coma.

The elderly person might also display some other symptoms which not all seniors will develop. These symptoms of end stage renal failure in the elderly are as follows:

  • Increase in urination during the night
  • Experiencing a lot of thirst
  • Bad breath
  • Loss of appetite
  • Hypertension
  • Abnormalities in the structure of nails
  • Abnormality in the skin color -- the skin turns either light or dark
