Types Of Dental Implants
If you have a missing tooth or several missing teeth, one of the best solutions for you is to opt for dental implants. Not only will dental implants return your ability to eat, chew and speak without problems, they will also help to aesthetically improve your appearance. No one will be able to tell that you have dental implants. |
However, there are different types of dental implants, and you should discuss with the dentist as to which type of dental implant will best suit your dental needs.
Here are some of the common types of dental implants that you should know about:
- The root type dental implant is made from titanium, and is the most common type to be used by dentists. They are also known as endosteal implants. A titanium screw is fixed into the jaw bone, and a crown is attached to the abutment. These implants are very strong and durable.
- Subperiosteal implants are especially made for people who do not have sufficient bone mass to take the root type of implant. Here the implant is placed on the jaw, but under the gum. A protrusion comes out of the implant, and the crown is attached to the protrusion.
- Plate type of dental implant is made of a rectangular metallic plate that has one or two protrusions on one side. The plate is fixed vertically so that the protrusions come out of the gum, and then the crown is fixed to them.
- Ramus frame dental implant is primarily meant for people who have low bone mass in the lower jaw. The implant is placed at the rear end of the mouth and near the chin. Then, full or partial dentures are attached to the metallic bar that sticks out of the gum.
- Transosseous dental implant is used only in the lower jaw. The implant is fixed to the jaw bone, and extends the entire length of the lower jaw. However, it must be said that this dental implant is not used very often.
