What Is New In Dental Implants ?

Dental implants help to replace a missing tooth or several missing teeth. The implants are made from titanium, which is an inert metal and fuses well with the bone in the jaw, and once the healing is complete, the dentist attaches a crown onto the portion of the implant that is sticking out of the gum. Implants are extremely durable, and with proper maintenance and oral hygiene, they can last for 10 to 20 years.

When it comes to surgically implanting the dental implants, a dentist has to take into consideration the height and width of the jaw bone. It should be sufficient to provide a stable and strong support to the implant. If the height and width is insufficient, the implant will fail. So, many times, to increase the height and width of the jaw bone, dentists resort to bone grafts.

However, the advances made dental implant technology has opened many new avenues for dentists and patients. Today, even patients with less bone mass in the jaw can opt for dental implants. This is done by way of new dental implants that are smaller in size and circumference compared to the traditional titanium implants that are commonly used.

The smaller size of the implants allows people with less bone mass to get benefit of dental implants. In addition, it has also been seen the recovery time and the trauma of undergoing a surgical procedure also reduces substantially if these smaller dental implants are used.

The implants are around 1.8mm in diameter, which is less than the usual 3.5mm diameter that normal implants have. Also, the fact that they are small, the implants can be put in without worrying about damage to the underlying nerves in the jaw.

Today, many dentists are opting for the smaller dental implants, and offering more patients a way to get back their lost teeth which earlier would have been impossible for many if they did not strong jawbone and sufficient bone mass.

Alternative-To-Dental-Implant      If you want to have a dental implant, then you need to have healthy gums and sufficient bone in the jaws to fix in the implants. You should also be very particular about visiting the dentists at twice a year and maintaining good oral hygiene after the implants. Dental implants are not for people suffering from gum disease, chronic illnesses like diabetes or who are smokers as they are prone to weak gums and this can cause gum disease. More..
