How Is Alzheimers Disease Spread Among Humans

One of the worse diseases that a person can get as he ages is Alzheimer's. The person slowly starts fading right in front of your eyes and you feel so helpless because there is nothing you can do to stop the spread of the disease. So, how does Alzheimer's disease spread among humans?

Although scientists still do not know the cause of Alzheimer's, they have been able to map the spread of the disease among humans. Although this explanation on how does Alzheimer's disease spread among humans may seem a little technical but it will help you understand how the spreading of the disease in the brain causes so many symptoms you see in a loved one.

Scientists know for sure that the disease initially starts in entorhinal cortex, the region in the brain that is responsible for memory. From here the disease then travels to the hippocampus, a part of the brain that is responsible for relaying signals to the entorhinal cortex. Thereafter, the disease spreads to the cerebral cortex, the area of the brain that controls language. It is from the cerebral cortex that Alzheimer's then spreads to other parts of the brain.

Although Alzheimer's is incurable, by mapping how the disease spreads in the brain, scientists have been able to propose methods that can prevent Alzheimer's. They believe that the regions of the brain that are affected by the disease should be kept active. You can keep the entorhinal cortex and cerebral cortex active by meeting people and socializing with them. You can keep the hippocampus active by playing memory games or solving puzzles. That is why it is quite common to see older people being encouraged to take on a new hobby like learning to play a musical instrument as this reduces the chances of Alzheimer's.
