What Is Farsightedness ?

Farsightedness, also known as long sight or hyperopia, is a condition that causes a common eye or vision problem.

People with this condition cannot see things that are too close to them, including reading newspapers or books. They tend to hold the paper or book faraway so that they can see the letters clearly.

The main cause for this problem is that the eyeball is too short. In a normal person, where the eyeball is shaped regularly in a spherical manner, the light passing through the lens falls directly on the retina. This is required for normal vision. However, in people with farsightedness the light passing through the lens falls behind the retina. So, objects that are placed close by are ignored by the retina, and only objects far away are come into the range of vision.

The size of the eyeball cannot be changed. So the easier way to do it through surgery would be to adjust the cornea, and make sure that the light falls directly on the retina. The surgery can be performed under local anesthesia, and with the help of laser technology. LASIK is one of the most common laser surgeries used for retinal corrections for both farsightedness and nearsightedness.

Farsightedness can occur at anytime during the life. It is not typically an age related problem. People usually have only one kind of vision problem and that is either farsightedness or nearsightedness. Both the conditions do not coexist together at the same time in the same person.
