Lungs Problems That Cause Chest Pain

Number of lung disorders that can cause chest pain. Even something as simple as a cough can lead to chest pain. Therefore, instead of thinking of the worst, it is best to gain knowledge about lung problems that cause chest pain so that you can rule out certain diseases.

Lung Problems That Cause Chest Pain:

Pneumonia (infection of lungs) can also cause sharp chest pain. Chest pain occurs because of inflammation to the linings of lungs. Chest pain due to pneumonia is aggravated by sharp breathing condition. With pneumonia usually come other problems such as breathlessness, fever, cough and phlegm.

Pleuritis is an inflammation of the coverings of the lungs. The pain due to pleuritus is sharp and localized and it gets worse when you inhale or cough.

Pneumothorax is a condition in which air or gas accumulates in the pleural sac that causes part or all of a lung to collapse. The pain here is usually one sided, sharp, starts suddenly and is aggravated by breathing.

A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot becomes lodged in a lung (pulmonary artery), blocking the flow of oxygenated blood to the lung tissue. This is rare life-threatening condition. The pain due to pneumothorax is sharp and unilateral and is aggravated by breathing in and breathing out.

Pulmonary hypertension is a rare lung disorder characterized by increased blood pressure in pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein, or pulmonary capillaries together known as lung vasculature, leading to shortness of breath and chest pain which is aggravated by physical exertion.

Apart from this other disorder of the airways such as asthma, bronchitis can activate chest pain. Chest pain associated with asthma and bronchitis produces grey-yellow phelgm.
