Pneumonia is an acute or chronic disease of lungs marked by inflammation of lungs and caused by viruses, bacteria (pneomocococcus, stretptococcus, staphylococcus) or other microorganisms and sometimes by physical and chemical irritant.

Pneumonia is usually triggered when patient’s defense system is usually weakened, most often by simple viral upper respiratory tract infection or a case of influenza. Pneumonia can also be caused by cold and flu.

Pneumonia is treated with rest and medication. It can take between a week and several weeks to overcome pneumonia. Most of the pneumonia patients do not even need hospitalization. Typically oral antibiotics, rest, fluids, and home care are sufficient for treatment of pneumonia. However, people with pneumonia who are having trouble breathing, people with other medical problems, and the elderly may need more advanced treatment. Pneumonia is an infection of lungs caused by bacteria, viruses and other microorganism and sometimes by physical and chemical irritant. When a person has pneumonia, his lung tissues are filled with pus and other fluid, which makes it difficult for the person to breathe.

The length of pneumonia depends on the specific organism causing it and the type of pneumonia the person has. Some pneumonia last as little as several days, although two to three weeks is more common; but the cough can last even longer. Does pneumonia leave a scar on the lungs? The quick answer to this question is not necessarily in most cases. Lung scarring can be caused due to variety of reasons one of which is called interstitial pneumonitis.  Interstitial pneumonitis is inflammation without infection. It usually affects all the four lobes of the lungs making it difficult to breathe and it often leaves a scar.
