Drugs That Help Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a condition where the patient hears ringing, buzzing, or other sounds in the absence of any internal or external acoustical stimulation. Patients may experience tinnitus in one or both ears or in the head. Tinnitus is either caused by specific condition such as an ear infection, the use of certain drugs, blocked auditory tube or head injury.

Tinnitus affects as many as 40 million adults in the United States. When tinnitus interferes severely in your life there are several options to choose from that may help, eliminate or reduce your symptoms. One of these options is use of drugs that may help you in reducing symptoms to some extent.

Some of drugs that help tinnitus are as follows:

  • Anti-depressant drugs: The main anti-depressant drug that is used for treatment of tinnitus is Xanax. It has been found that seventy-six percent of people who used this drug reported that they have benefited from this drug and there was considerable reduction in their symptoms.
  • Intravenous Lidocaine: Lidocaine is a common local anesthetic and antiarrhythmic drug. An injection of Lidocaine into the inner ear found to suppress the tinnitus for20 minutes, according to sweedish study.
  • Antihistamines: Antihistamines that are used to help treat allergies may also help to reduce the sounds caused by this condition in many people.
  • Certain heart medications: Cardiovascular medications help to increase the blood flow in your body, which in turn can alleviate the symptoms of tinnitus.
  • Anticonvulsant medications: This medication is normally used to help prevent seizures but it may help reduce the symptoms of tinnitus in some people.

Apart from drugs complimentary treatment such as medication, yoga and relaxation technique, acupuncture and hypnosis should be adopted. If tinnitus does not respond to drugs, then there is another treatment option is involve i.e. surgery though this option is rarely used.
