Tattoos and body piercings are becoming more and more popular, especially among the younger generation. However, as beautiful as tattoos and body piercings look, they also increase the risk of getting disease, especially blood borne diseases. In fact, many people are not aware of the health risks associated with tattoos and body piercings.

Health Risks Associated with Tattoos and Body Piercings:

The skin and mucus membrane of the mouth and nose are present to protect us from infections. Both tattooing and body piercing involve the use of needles that are required to pierce the skin or mucus membrane. If the needles are not sterilized, you are at the risk of getting infected by the blood of another person.

All of us have bacteria and viruses living on our bodies. Your risk of getting an infection increases with tattooing and body piercing as these bacteria and viruses can enter through the pierced skin.

It is quite possible to get viral infections like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS and herpes through tattooing and body piercing. In addition, you can also contract bacterial skin infections like streptococcus and staphylococcus.

Minimizing Health Risks Associated with Tattoos and Body Piercings:

Before getting a tattoo or piercing, make sure you choose the place properly. Ensure that the practitioner uses new and sterile needles, and wears gloves. In addition, the place should be clean as you are at risk of contracting infection if the area where the tattoo or piercing is done is unclean or dirty. The practitioner should give clients oral and written instructions on how to take care of piercings or tattoos are the procedure.

Before tattooing or piercing, the practitioner should wash his or her hands properly and then disinfect the area where the tattoo or piercing has to be done.

Besides this, you should also take measures from your end. Make sure you do not get a tattoo or piercing on skin that is broken, cut, has pimples or warts. Before applying any ointment after the procedure, wash your hand thoroughly.

In case you feel an infection coming on, consult your doctor immediately.
